Ridding Your Home Of Ants

Posted on

In the springtime, ants will start to surface outdoors once again. After hibernating all winter long, they will be hungry and ready to invade any area that seems like it has a readily accessible snack. If you notice ants coming inside your own home, you will want to be diligent in getting rid of them before they multiply, making them more difficult to battle. Here are some ways to remove ants from the home and a few ways to deter them from wanting to come inside in the first place.

Removing Ants

To remove ants from the home, unfortunately, you will most likely have to kill them. There are several different types of ant killing sprays and traps that you can purchase in your local home goods store. If you have children or pets, you might be a little apprehensive about using a pesticide spray. You can try to make your own concoction to kill ants from a few tablespoons of rubbing alcohol and a few tablespoons of dish detergent mixed in a spray bottle filled with water. Spray it directly on ants that you see to kill them on contact.

Stopping Ants From Entering

To keep ants out of your home, you should do a spot check of the foundation of your home to look for cracks that ants can fit inside. Use caulk to fill them in completely. You can place gravel around your home right up to the walls of your foundation to keep ants away from the base of your house. Move any wood piles away from the home to keep insects away, as well. If you have pets, keep their food dishes up when they are not using them. Make sure your garbage cans have lids that shut tight. Do not leave garbage bags in any area of the garage or shed outside of a can.

Keeping Things Clean

Cleanliness is extremely important when trying to keep ants and other insects from coming into your home. If you do not take the time to clean up thoroughly, ants will be able to find food sources. Make sure you vacuum your carpets regularly and clean all countertops in your kitchen after each meal you prepare. Use a bleach cleaner to remove any scent of food from surfaces you use, such as counters and the stove. Remove all grease, as this is an attraction to insects and rodents.
