Going Away On Vacation? You Should Have An Exterminator Come By First

Posted on

If you're going away for an extended vacation, you might want to consider having an exterminator come out to your home before you leave. There are a couple of good reasons why you might want to take care of any pest control problems that you have. You might think that pest problems are merely minor inconveniences that you have to deal with. Unfortunately, that's not always correct. Rodent and insect infestations can wreak havoc on your home, and cause damage that you might not expect.

Ants

Those ants that you find crawling around your counter top could be crawling in through tiny holes in your walls. They could also be digging their way up through cracks in your foundation. In some cases, they will even chew away at the seal around your sinks and find their way in under your sink. If you leave them to crawl in your home while you're on vacation, you could return to find the seal to your sink gone, and the minor foundation damage turned into a sizable crack.

Mice And Rats

Rodents are more than just a nuisance in your home. They can cause significant damage to your home. Not only that, they pose health and safety risks to you and your family. Even if you don't see them, they could be multiplying inside the walls and attic of your home. Some of the problems that rodents bring with them include infectious diseases, wire damage, and fire hazards.

Infectious Diseases

There are several infectious diseases that mice and rats could potentially infect your home with. While they're busy crawling around in your cabinets and on your counter tops, they could be spreading salmonellosis, hemorrhagic fever and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.

Damage To Your Home

Rodents that are given the opportunity to build nests in the walls and attic of your home will chew through anything during their stay in the building. This includes your walls, ceilings, insulation, and even the electrical wiring. If left unattended while you're away on vacation, even a small mouse could chew right through the drywall in your ceiling.

Fire Hazards

You might not realize this, but rodents can also pose potential fire hazards in your home. If they chew through the wiring in your home and the exposed wires spark, small electrical fires can erupt inside the walls of your home. Mice can also knock over lit candles that you might have out on your counter tops. If you accidentally leave a candle burning when you leave, one mouse could knock that candle over and cause a fire that could destroy your home.

To protect your home and your family, you should schedule a home inspection before you leave your home for an extended period of time. Once the exterminator has determined the types of pests you're having a problem with, they will be able to remove the threat from your home. Even if you're not sure that you have a pest problem, it's a good idea to have your home inspected.
